Learn about our philosophy and experience

Alex Ruiz - Director of Soccer Operations

Originally born in Monterrey, Mexico, my family moved to Colorado when I was very young where I grew up both playing and coaching soccer. I started coaching youth soccer camps on my own when I was 15 years old, more so for younger players who were looking to start playing soccer for the first time. My approach to coaching players who are just starting out is to teach basic soccer skills and fundamentals in a way that also instills a passion for the game. I began coaching competitive soccer at age 18 with Colorado Storm and then Colorado United. Currently, I coach two competitive teams at Colorado Elevation FC. As a player and a coach, I have been fortunate enough to learn from some of the best coaches in the state, many of whom have had experience coaching at a professional level in Central America, South America, and Europe. I have been a student of the game of soccer since a young age and have always affirmed a “possession with a purpose” approach that relies heavily on technical ability, movement off the ball, and creativity.

5280 Athletics Soccer Philosophy

In the 5280 Athletics Soccer Program, we focus not just on developing smart soccer players with our “possession with a purpose” approach, but we also believe that building character is just as important. Our team of coaches shares the same passion and dedication to bring out the best in players regardless of age or skill level with the belief that, “coaching is taking a player where they can’t take themselves.”
